A Book Report of: Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America’s Classrooms Abstract This paper is intended to explore and report upon the topics posited by Tyrone C. Howard in his book, Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in Americas Classrooms. Closely examining each and every chapter as they come and how the structure of this book gives a detailed framework and guidance system for novice and experienced teachers to take their pedagogical skills to more diverse and multicultural levels. Also, this paper will review a few lessons or projects that can be adapted and used within my personal educational institute in order to create†¦show more content†¦The data is compared to those students come from affluent socioeconomic status and backgrounds. The data is sourced from several diverse locations in order to give the broadest view of the disparities that exist. Howard (2010) compares data in reading, mathematics, SAT results and disciplinary rates. This data is a formidable beginning to the content of the book because it provide s context for the reader to better understand the achievement gap. Chapter Two Howard (2010) quickly changes gears in Chapter two, Changing Demographics, to look at the differences in language, ethnicity, race issues, culture and classism when regarded and compared to those who achieve on level and those who fall in the achievement gap. Howard examines the quickly changing face of America with the increase in Latino populations across the nation. Positing that teachers must adapt to understand and connect to students of diverse populations or there will be a great disconnect and divide that could be disastrous for the growing number of students that are part of the achievement gap, as well as the negative ramifications that could come from not evaluating the needs of those in the achievement gap. Global Warming What is Global warming? Countless feel as if it is a natural phenomenon the Earth cycles through. Those individuals are terribly mistaken. It is the effect of greenhouse gasses emitted by the machines we use today. These gasses are becoming trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, causing the temperature to rise. The effects of global warming are all around us and are becoming more prominent. There are already efforts in place to stop it and programs to â€Å"go green.† This climate change is a serious threat that needs to be addressed. How can a person live on an earth that is too hot to be habitable? If global warming isn’t stopped horrible catastrophes will happen. Even today, the beginnings of these terrible disasters can be seen all around the world. The sea levels are rising, food shortages are popping up, the global temperature is rising, and much more. As the base temperature of the Earth starts to rise, the polar ice caps are melting. This is c ausing the sea level to rise. Although this may not seem like a problem, it would cause the sea level to rise 70 meters or 230 feet and would destroy our large coastal cities causing mass destruction.
